2011 Golf Competition

Lee Trevino once chastised his amateur playing partner in a pro-am, when he enquired the distance to the pin and the amateur answered “it’s a six iron”. Trevino pointed out that he could hit the green with every club in the bag but he wanted to know how far it was.

For the past 10 years or so, we have been challenging our golf competition entrants to emulate Trevino’s expertise with our two club and putter competition. Most competitors return to the clubhouse surprised that they could do as well (at least, not much worse) than when they play with a full set of 14 clubs. It’s a fun competition, and designed to be a sporting challenge to the beginner and the more experienced golfer.

This year’s competition will again be held at Windlemere Golf Club, West End, Surrey, where the course layout, its mix of par 3 and short par 4 holes makes it ideal for this event. To give everyone a fair chance we split the field into three divisions – Ladies, Men with a club handicap, and a bandit’s division for the non-handicappers. Our sponsors donate some amazing prizes that are awarded to winners and runners-up at the post match hot buffet supper that is laid on by our members’ wives.

The golf competition is one of Surrey Border Lions Club’s major fund raising events which has benefitted local charities by an average of £1200 each year. This year’s competition will be held on Sunday, 2nd October 2011 from 2.00pm. Application forms can be obtained at the pro-shop of Windlemere Golf Club, or by email to david.pollen@btinternet.com

Regretfully, Lee Trevino will not be playing this year!
